Position Description

Position Summary:

The Director, Health Initiatives will professionally represent the American Cancer Society in the community through Health Care Systems, primarily large American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Commission on Cancer (CoC) accredited systems, to ensure the successful delivery of priority programs and services. Leads the Community Program staff team to successful mission outcomes in patient navigation, quality of life, community comprehensive cancer control and advocacy throughout the state of Michigan excluding Southeast Michigan (Region) in accordance with the division strategic plan. Reports directly to the division Chief Operating Officer (C.O.O.). Serves as the principal relationship manager with large CoC health care systems, community health departments, large clinical practices, and other key community partners. Fosters strong collaboration between systems and the American Cancer Society. Strategically and tactically leverages volunteer and staff resources to achieve goals. Supervises Community Program team in the region, ensuring compliance with all policies and procedures and internal control requirements. Member and active participant of the Division Health Initiatives Team.

Roles, Responsibilities and Duties:

A. Planning and Training
Plans and directs the activities for the region in collaboration with the appropriate community health leaders. Responsible for meeting or exceeding goals as mutually agreed upon
Responsible for the long-term planning and evaluation of region health system, comprehensive cancer control, and advocacy activities in accordance with the division strategic plan.
Actively engages with the division cancer control department in the collaborative goal setting process for the region.
Establishes and/or utilizes specific measures of desired outcomes to assess organizational, regional and market performance.
Participates in the developing, monitoring and updating of the Community Program Work Plan and resource allocation recommendations.

B. Budgeting
Recommends and negotiates annual budget for operating expenditures with in the region for cancer control activities.
Fiscally responsible for managing expenditures within the appropriated budget

C. Volunteer Development
Makes self known and accessible to key volunteer leadership in the region
Strategically guides community program staff to recruit key volunteer leaders as needed for mission delivery and mission support opportunities

D. Employer Initiatives
Oversees the executing of health system community and corporate health initiatives in the region.

E. Advocacy
Participates in the execution of advocacy strategies in the region

F. Diversity
Seeks out opportunities to better involve diverse constituents.

G. Disparities
Seeks out opportunities to develop relationships with health organizations and leaders representing disparate populations.

H. Internal Communications
Fosters strong collaboration between region and Division staff; encourages communication between region and Division staff within same functional area with goal toward continual process improvement.

I. Income Development
Directs efforts within health systems and public health community partners to maximize net fundraising results. In collaboration with field managers, develops multi-year income plan designed to realize the total estimated opportunity in health partners.

J. Staff Leadership and Development
Leads by example and provides clear vision of organizational direction and success, establishes and maintains an environment which welcomes and appreciates diverse perspectives.
Motivates region community program staff to achieve set goals.
Directly supervises designated staff and serves as a mentor and coach.
Creates an encouraging environment for staff in which they can learn, grow and develop.
Conveys and practices stewardship value for all regional activities.

K. Data Management
Oversees data management practices for region to ensure compliance with established standards

L. Human Resources
In coordination with field managers, ensures strong recruitment, retention and performance management practices within region. Has a direct role in the hiring process of all field community program positions in the region.
Ensures that personnel practices within region are in compliance with Division policies and risk management practices.

M. Financial Control
Oversees compliance with all financial policies and procedures and internal control requirements.

N. Relationship Development
In coordination with field managers, oversees the development and maintenance of partner relationships with leaders of priority health organizations and other influential individuals in the market, incorporating ACS program offerings as appropriate.

Position Requirements

Qualifications/Requirements:

Bachelor s degree in related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Registered Nurse, Masters of Public Health (MPH) or Masters Public Administration (MPA) preferred
Five or more year s successful experience in management, community organization, relationship development, medical systems knowledge and/or significant personal volunteer experience. Minimum four years of staff management/team leadership experience.
Advanced knowledge of health care systems, medical terminology, community organization and customer relations; oncology related medical experience helpful
Excellent recruiting, motivational and communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with others
Ability to provide leadership, build alliances and maintain positive visibility in communities throughout the market
Ability to organize, motivate and supervise teams
Ability to analyze and integrate information from relevant sources
Proven project management skills and ability to respond to changing circumstances and priorities in a focused manner.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision
Job requires extensive local and regional travel by car or air (approximately 50% of time)
Must possess a valid driver s license

Must be a non tobacco user
